Manual Therapy Students

Start with Basic Profiles in a Quality Instrument

Students often ask me which IASTM tools are the “best.” I often reply that even the best tool is only as good as the treatment plan it’s being used for. In school, the “best” tool is one that gives you a quality finish, versatile profile, and modest price. There is no need to purchase the most expensive set of instruments when you are in school. My advise is to look at our Basic 3-in-1 (which you can trade up later- for it's purchase price towards a Myofascial Pro set or Advanced Practice set).

The Basic 3-in-1 gives you the essential concave, convex, and prow profiles to handle the majority of tissue contacts.  It is easy to clean, easy to hold, and slips nicely into your clinic bag... Here are some answers to common student questions:

  • What if I plan to use a larger set in practice soon? - If you are highly enthusiastic about IASTM and know you want to utilize one of our premium sets in the near future, I recommend  purchasing one of the premium “M” medium tools, for which the rest of a complete set can be added later.  Though, remember you can always "trade up" the 3-in-1 for its purchase price towards a clinic set.

  • Do you offer Student Discounts? - Save $10 ea. on two 3-in-1's. Students, nearing graduation, already preparing for practice may inquire about a student/recent grad discount on one of our Myofascial Pro or Advanced Practice clinic sets.  Please E-mail us to see if we have any current promotions for the Tool and/or Set you are interested in.

  • What learning resources do you have? - Style specific Technique Primers and the four basic technique stroke videos are on the Technique Page.  There is also a zip download with several IASTM / Myofascial Research Articles available at the bottom of this page.

An IASTM tool is limited to its contact, stroke amplitude/direction, & pressure... the success lies in accessing the kinetic chain for dysfunction and applying the strokes to the right tissues.
It is highly recommend for students to purchase the Fascial Manipulation text by Luigi Stecco and the Anatomy Trains text by Thomas Meyers. These texts, more than any others, give you a comprehensive protocol for ASSESSMENT of the myofascial system that is leap years ahead of the “one joint at a time” approach still prevalent in health care education.

In professional school coursework or in postgraduate seminar work, IASTM can be an excellent hands-on treatment segment to teach. All the background, science, applied theory, and practical protocols are found within our Technique Primer PDF. As long as you properly cite the Primer, you can use all or any part of it for educational purposes. And, as I note in the introduction, we mandate no brand exclusivity for IASTM instruments. IASTM is an academic, non-proprietary adjunct soft tissue technique free for development and evolution within the greater umbrella of manual therapy.

Many physical therapy, chiropractic, and massage schools have seen the benefit of teaching specific soft tissue techniques like IASTM. Forward thinking educators see that instruments are an adjunct to manual therapies already practiced by hand. And, that in certain applications. instruments can access the anatomy better for improved clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Here are the top benefits:
  • Instruments ease delivery of soft tissue therapy for the practitioner
  • Instruments focus mechanical forces on smaller anatomical targets
  • Instruments allow unique palpation and "feedback" of soft tissue topography
The Basic “3-in-1” with concavity, convexity, focus prow, and non-slip grip is affordable with student discount and can be purchased in bulk for seminars/programs.  Paired with the free Technique Primer download, all students in the class or seminar can participate in an IASTM learning segment for less than the cost of a textbook. Don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me for help fine tuning an IASTM addition to your current syllabus.

All soft tissue therapies achieve clinical success based on the same physiological mechanisms of action. In terms of current research, there has been a quantum leap in collaboration and original study by contributors and associates of the World Fascial Congress.
